Classroom management is vital to create a classroom environment that is safe and comfortable for students. If classroom management is not taken seriously, students will not thrive. The classroom should be organized, welcoming, and a place for learning. Classroom management increases growth and learning while decreasing unwanted behaviors.
I believe in order to be a successful teacher we need to be a combination of a behaviorist and a humanist. Over my experience in practicum one, I have found myself leaning toward using both of these theories. I believe students need discipline and to have objectives that are clear and concise. I also believe that students need to reflect on their learning and be treated as adults. Students need to have responsibility over their learning.
I am comfortable controlling the classroom environment. I came well-prepared everyday of my practicum 1. Preparation is something I have to have when teaching. I am not the type of person to “wing it.” I am very well organized and detailed person. Even though I have that personality I allow students to express themselves in ways that are conducive to them. I am willing to adapt to different situations.
The layout and decoration of my ideal classroom should be warm and inviting. Students come ready to learn. Student’s desks are placed in groups to encourage student/peer collaboration. I would like a “quiet center” for students to read silently and have “me time.” I believe this is important for students that have difficulties with controlling emotions and need to remove themselves from the situation.
Rules and expectations are important because students need to know what is expected of them at school. This could either be a school wide system or individual classroom systems. Expectations should adapt to student needs and be consistently reinforced throughout the year. Along with rules and expectations comes discipline. Students should know when they do not follow the rules there will be consequences. I will make this apparent to my students from day one.
Building community in the classroom is important because students should feel safe at school with the people and the classroom. Students are able to open up when they feel safe. We build community through a multitude of things.
Classroom management skills are what are used to run a successful classroom. These skills manage behavior and help create an environment where students can learn. Situations in the classroom occur and as teachers we are called upon to fix and find solutions. Planning is important in running a classroom but adapting to needs and situations is what will help you and your students succeed. I will set a positive attitude in my classroom and come prepared to teach everyday.
